About The Position

The Philadelphia Flyers are seeking a detail-oriented, analytically minded intern to join our Hockey Research team for the summer. We are looking for someone driven, humble, and who takes initiative. You will work directly with the Director of Analytics & Strategy as well as other members of hockey operations. This is an opportunity to work with high-frequency spatiotemporal data (e.g., NHL Player and Puck Tracking Data, Sportlogiq, or similar tracking feeds) and design research around in-game strategy. Other research projects across hockey operations will also be considered (salary cap and contract research, NHL entry draft, player development, etc.).

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Economics, or a related quantitative field
  • Proficiency in R and/or Python
  • Strong SQL skills: able to write complex queries involving joins, window functions, and CTEs against relational databases (Microsoft SQL Server, or similar)
  • Familiarity with hockey data structures (play-by-play, shifts, advanced metrics) and basic hockey terminology
  • Experience with version control (Git) and reproducible workflow practices
  • Commitment of 20-40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks total.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior work with sports tracking data or spatial analytics
  • Exposure to statistical modeling (regression, regularization, mixed effects) or machine learning frameworks
  • Experience with data visualization (ggplot2, matplotlib, Plotly)
  • Completed coursework in probability, experimental design, or game theory
