About The Position

We are currently looking for a Histotechnologist for a multi-year contract position supporting CDC. Since the CDC supports a wide cross-training initiative, ideally, we would like to find a Histotechnologist professional that has experience with molecular testing, specifically to conduct In Situ Hybridization and image analysis for formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. Again, this is an ideal combination of skills and individuals with solid Histotech experience are encouraged to apply. Under this contract, the professional will independently providing the support outlined below.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree (Bachelor Preferred) in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or other related science field.
  • 2-3 years of Histotechnician experience in performing duties outlined above.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to retain and build upon knowledge base.
  • Ability to independently identify potential issues or discrepancies with case inquiries or submissions.
  • Good oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and written technical and non-technical information.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory records and files.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with molecular testing, specifically to conduct In Situ Hybridization and image analysis for formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues.
  • Previous experience working in a CLIA environment.

Responsibilities

  • Process and embed human and animal tissue samples daily.
  • Section paraffin-embedded tissue blocks daily.
  • Prepare histologic slides using Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) stains daily.
  • Perform histochemical special stains weekly.
  • Operate and maintain histology laboratory equipment daily. This includes operating and changing reagents on tissue processors and automated stainers according to the established schedules, and cleaning processors, embedding centers, and microtomes after use.
  • File slides, blocks, and related worksheets daily. The total amount of filing will correspond to the total amount of filing will correspond to the total number of blocks cut and the number of tests (H&E and special stains) performed daily.
  • Enter test results and work-related information into laboratory database daily for all sectioning and tests performed (H&E and special stains).
  • Perform various computing tasks daily using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access) to document specimen and test information, generate and update test request lists and worksheets, print labels, write standard operating procedures (SOPs), and periodically create graphic displays (using PowerPoint) of workflow steps and/or processes.
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control activities daily (according to established standards) to ensure the proper handling of specimens, processing of specimens, labeling of specimens, use of laboratory equipment, and quality of tests performed. This includes documenting all quality assurance and quality control activities on related worksheets and forms.
  • Periodically prepare written and/or verbal scientific summaries of testing methods used and tasks completed for assigned projects and presents summaries to team members and colleagues.
