About The Position

Under supervision by Senior-level technologists, Lead technologist and the Histology Supervisor, the incumbent serves as a Histotechnologist in the Histology laboratory. Duties include tissue processing, embedding, paraffin sectioning, H&E staining, Special Staining, specimen receipt and accessioning, Laboratory Information System operation, Quality Assurance record keeping, instrument maintenance, intra-operative frozen sections, and other technical duties as assigned, including coverage in the Immunohistochemistry laboratory and Grossing lab as determined by the Lab Manager. Rotates weekly between workstations within the lab. Work schedule is variable to include Saturdays and holiday coverage as scheduled. Incumbent must be able to flex work hours as needed to meet Department operational needs and cover work rotations.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry, AND one year of experience as a histotechnologist, preferably in a high-volume hospital histology laboratory within the last five years, or completion of an associate degree from an accredited Histotechnology program
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated high volume and high quality sectioning skills

Nice To Haves

  • One to two years’ experience as a Histotechnologist.
  • ASCP certification: HT or HTL licensed strongly preferred
  • One to two years experience as a Histotechnologist
  • ASCP certification: HTL licensed strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Operate laboratory information system to enter and recall histology lab-related information. Use computer system for barcoding and tracking of case materials.
  • Operate tissue processors to prepare tissue for embedding and sectioning
  • Embed tissue in paraffin for sectioning
  • Section paraffin-embedded tissue to prepare microscopic slides for staining
  • Prepare staining solutions and stain tissue per standard operating procedures. Operate automated staining instruments. Assemble case slides and deliver to pathologists/residents.
  • Coverslip microscope slides with appropriate coverslips, manual or operate automated coverslipping instruments
  • Organize slides for IHC and ISH staining. Operate automated staining instruments. Assemble case slides and deliver to pathologists/residents.
  • File blocks and slides in a timely manner in appropriate filing areas.
  • Work within the department QA system to provide feedback on quality issues. Assist with maintenance of control slides and control blocks
  • Participate in new test validation and introduction procedures following standard operating procedures.
  • As assigned maintains QC records for refrigerators, ovens and instruments.
  • Provide leadership and direction to laboratory staff
  • Oversight of laboratory operations
