About The Position

UPMC Harrisburg is seeking experienced Histotech candidates for the role of Histotechnologist/Histotechnician. Candidates may be hired at either the Histotechnologist or Histotechnician level depending on experience/education requirements met. The primary purpose of this role is to process and prepare specialized tissue samples per competency guidelines in a clinical laboratory. Responsibilities include monitoring the quality of work performed by others, evaluating new procedures, techniques, and tools, and resolving problems that impact test results. Experienced candidates are eligible for a $20,000 sign-on bonus, new grads for $15,000, and all hires are eligible for a $10,000 bonus upon completion of three years of service.

Requirements

Histotechnologist: Successful completion of bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry. One year of clinical histology laboratory experience post training if not a graduate of accredited training program required.
Histotechnician: Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR an Associate's degree and 1 year clinical Histology experience OR at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/ university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry and 1 year clinical Histology experience OR 3 years' experience working as a Histology Lab Technician or equivalent without certification.
American Society Clinical Pathology Histotechnologist- HTL (ASCP) certification required within 12 months of hire.
New York License required for NY locations.

UPMC Central PA employees active in a histotechnician, on or before the effective date 1/1/2020, are grandfathered regarding certification and will not need to obtain it unless they move into a different position that would require certification.

Responsibilities

Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area.
Supports academic mission of department.
Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.
Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/staining.
Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping.
Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.
