About The Position

The Histotechnician prepares tissue specimens for surgical pathology examination. This includes evaluating the acceptability of the specimens, properly embedding the processed tissue, cutting/sectioning the specimens, and staining the slides using automated or manual methods.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Histology or in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution (Required)
  • Basic computer skills (Required proficiency)
  • Good organizational skills (Required proficiency)
  • Able to multitask (Required proficiency)
  • Able to work effectively independently and with other team members (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of standard lab policy and procedures, safety practices equipment and instrumentation (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of principals, concepts, and methodology sufficient to perform the full spectrum of histologic preparation of specimens for microscopic evaluation (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of staining procedures, fixatives, and preparation techniques common to histology laboratories (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety including standard precautions for handling hazardous chemicals and solutions (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of CAP/CLIA regulations as they pertain to histopathology

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ years experience in a clinical histology laboratory (Preferred)
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists HT(ASCP) (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Performs embedding and cutting on both biopsies and large surgical specimens, while consistently meeting quality and productivity standards.
  • Follows lab policies and procedures to perform moderate complexity testing
  • Maintains and demonstrates competency assessment in all assigned areas to accurately and efficiently perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical processes for laboratory testing.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and documents laboratory equipment failures.
  • Completes all assigned mandatory assignments within allowed timelines.
  • Demonstrates clear communication with team members to optimize laboratory operations.
  • Actively participates in departmental projects; contributes positively to department environment/initiatives.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment.
  • Takes responsibility for self-development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
