About The Position

Labcorp is seeking a Histotechnician Trainee to join our team in Portland, OR. This role involves assisting with processing human tissue and body fluid specimens, learning and performing technical duties related to histopathological slide production, and supporting routine laboratory operations. The trainee will learn to section embedded tissue, perform routine and special staining procedures, and assist with immunohistochemical procedures. The position also includes learning specimen orientation and embedding, preparing stains and reagents, and ensuring accurate and timely completion of work for quality patient care. Responsibilities extend to operating and maintaining laboratory instruments, performing quality control, and maintaining accurate documentation. Adherence to laboratory quality control policies, SOPs, safety policies, and PPE requirements is essential. The role may involve other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in a Chemical or Biological Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology
  • Familiarity with laboratory SOPs and safety protocols
  • Experience working in a high-volume laboratory environment
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • High level of attention to detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
  • Willingness to learn in a structured training environment and meet competency expectations
  • Able to pass a standardized color blindness test

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year or more experience working in a laboratory environment
  • 1 year or more experience in a histology or pathology laboratory setting
  • ASCP certification

Responsibilities

  • Assist with processing human tissue and body fluid specimens in preparation for microscopic examination
  • Learn and perform technical duties related to the production of histopathological slides of surgical specimens
  • Assist with sectioning embedded tissue using a microtome and mounting sections on microscope slides
  • Learn routine and special staining procedures, including H&E staining, under supervision
  • Assist with immunohistochemical procedures on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue sections as training progresses
  • Learn proper orientation and embedding of surgical tissue specimens
  • Assist with preparation of stains and reagents for routine and special procedures
  • Support accurate and timely completion of work to ensure quality patient care
  • Assist with operation and routine maintenance of manual and automated laboratory instruments
  • Perform and document equipment maintenance, quality control, and preventive maintenance activities as directed
  • Accurately complete required logs, documentation, and records in a timely manner
  • Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies
  • Follow laboratory SOPs for specimen handling, processing, analysis, and reporting
  • Document and communicate problems that may affect test performance and escalate as needed
  • Comply with all laboratory safety policies and PPE requirements
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
