About The Position

Histology Lab Assistant will be responsible for clerical and technical duties to assure timely, accurate and efficient distribution of pathology slides for better patient care. All work will be performed within the laboratory and in close proximity to electrical instruments, computers, and other laboratory equipment and chemicals.

Requirements

  • High attention to detail, manual dexterity, and basic computer proficiency.
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow a series of steps without confusion or errors on an ongoing basis and retain the information once learned.
  • Detail-oriented, have the ability to work independently, establish work priorities and to handle several tasks simultaneously for maximum department efficiency.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with supervisors, co-workers and pathologists.
  • Ability to deal with client information manner (HIPAA compliance).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) and Laboratory Information System
  • High school diploma or GED (minimum)
  • At least one-year full time experience in a Histology/ IHC laboratory
  • Knowledge of handling chemical and biohazard material
  • Basic knowledge of biology and medical terminology
  • Involves constant standing, walking, sitting and movement
  • Ability to stand for a long periods and handle of chemicals
  • The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: 1-20 lbs. (frequently), 11-25 lbs. (occasionally), 36-50 lbs. (seldom) and over 50 lbs. (only with assistance).

Responsibilities

  • Removing IHC slides from equipment, labeling and distributing to pathologists.
  • Labeling H&E slides, checking off slides in LIS/ QC, accurately distributing to designated pathologists.
  • Verifying patient information on the slides and blocks and matching them against requisition.
  • Changing reagents (alcohol, xylene and stains) on automated equipment according to strict schedules.
  • Cleaning and performing basic maintenance on stainer, processors, microtomes and embedding stations.
  • Organizing and filing glass slides and paraffin blocks for long term storage and retrieval.
  • Properly disposing of chemical waste and biohazard materials (Sharps and tissue).
  • Recycling of reagents (alcohol and xylene).
  • Keeping and maintaining the recycler.
  • Maintaining temperature logs for refrigerators, eye was station, microwave, etc. to ensure regulatory compliance (CAP and CLIA).
  • Following safety standards in all aspects of performance of the above functions, reports/ removing unsafe equipment.
  • Monitoring supply inventory, stocking and maintaining laboratory supplies.
  • Cleaning, sterilizing, organizing and maintaining work area, glassware and laboratory equipment (refrigerators, freezers and supply cabinets as needed).
  • In addition to the responsibilities described above, the role may include other responsibilities and duties as assigned on occasion, based on PA needs or requirements.
