Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED minimum required
  • Special training of at least 30 days to six months in histology techniques required to achieve familiarity with handling specimens and staining
  • For Histotechnician II, Histotechnician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist license is required
  • All Histotechnicains are to complete 12 hours of continuing education per year per the laboratory’s Continuing Education SOP
  • Competency assessments will be performed upon hire and throughout the year per the laboratory’s Competency Assessment SOP
  • New Hire and Annual Training, including all required training sessions for all new and updated SOPs and updates to software systems as applicable
  • This job operates in a professional lab environment and may potentially be exposed to chemical, hazardous and biological samples
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines
  • While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to talk; hear; stand; walk; use hands to finger; handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms
  • This position also requires long duration of sitting and working on a computer
  • May require lifting up to 25 pounds without the aid of a device or a second person
  • Employee may be expected to travel up to 25% or less of their time from their home office

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree preferred
  • Formal ASCP-type accredited training is preferred as a quality standard
  • A pre-hire assessment will be conducted to determine familiarity with handling specimens and staining. A satisfactory score would be required for employment consideration
  • Training and a post training assessment for all role-applicable SOPs and Laboratory Compliance workflows must be completed after hire but before any laboratory work can be completed
  • A competency assessment will occur at one month before independent work is permitted
  • Prior work experience of six months is desired in order to gain familiarity on-the-job with histology techniques
  • Experience in large-scale organization or high-volume production environment preferred to gain seasoned familiarity with processing specimens in production environment
  • Should be familiar with most major techniques for staining and special staining
  • Analytical skills necessary for processing slides under tight deadlines and general supervision
  • Should have ability to identify specific specimens for supervisory follow-up
  • ASCP HT or HTL Certification is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Embed skin specimens such as shaves, punches, nails and excisions
  • Perform microtomy on histology blocks
  • Stain and coverslip hematoxylin and eosin slides
  • Perform special stain techniques such as, but not limited to, PAS, AFB and Gram stain
  • Perform immunohistochemistry stains on the Bond Max and the Ventana Ultra Cut control slides for IHC and special stains
  • Assist with slide distribution if needed
  • File paraffin blocks and H/E slides in accordance with procedures
  • Operate and maintain tissue processors
  • Trouble-shoot lab equipment and ensure proper routine maintenance
  • Ensure quality control procedures are followed and appropriate documentations are maintained
  • Monitor inventory and assure proper reagent documentation techniques
  • Biohazard and hazardous waste disposal in accordance with policy and regulations
  • Maintain a safe, clean work environment
  • Observe blood-borne pathogens policy and proper personal protective equipment
  • Adhere to all company and laboratory specific SOPs and complete quality control (QC) logs as required on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis (per individual SOPs)
