About The Position

The Histotechnician prepares surgical specimens submitted to the laboratory for microscopic examination by the pathologists, maintains records of prepared specimens and maintains equipment. Assists physicians with gross examination and with frozen sections.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent or higher degree with at least 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of academic credit of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both disciplines)
  • High School or equivalent or higher with 5 years of previous lab experience
  • 3 years of previous Histology or Cytology experience

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the efficient and timely pick up of specimens as directed throughout the hospital and laboratory.
  • Responsible for ensuring all specimens are received accurately to include appropriate documentation on all specimen logs.
  • Responsible for accurately accessioning and labeling surgical specimens and maintaining an accurate log of specimens using the laboratory computer system.
  • Responsible for accurately assigning cases for gross examination and pathologist review.
  • Assist with gross examination of tissue including labeling and preparing tissue cassettes.
  • Assist with specimen photography and prosectors with anything needed to include, but not limited to, troubleshooting specimen concerns, picking up cassettes, placing phone calls to physicians and other healthcare providers, getting additional supplies as requested, troubleshooting computer problems and/or getting additional assistance as requested.
  • Maintain Gross Room and Frozen Sections Rooms in a clean and orderly manner and ensures all are adequately stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of all gross room and frozen section items.
  • File slides and blocks appropriately.
  • Maintain appropriate storage and disposal of tissue specimens as required by CAP.
  • Responsible for loading and maintaining tissue processors daily.
  • Responsible for instrument maintenance on all equipment in Histology to include, but not limited to, the cryostats, processors and cassette printers.
  • Assist with Cytology specimen receipt and specimen preparation as required.
  • Perform duties using safe practices as outlined in the Department Safety Manual.
  • Maintains the quality of service in the laboratory consistent with CAP and JCAHO standards by using the established and current principles of specimen collection and preparation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
