Job Summary: Performs general histological duties, under direct supervision, according to established procedures as well as preparation of histologic slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the pathologist.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent years of experience and education
  • No experience required
  • State of Work Location: Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Wisconsin
  • Histotechnician (HT) (International Included)- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

Responsibilities

  • Collects, labels, processes and preserves tissue specimens according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Prepares sections of tissue for immediate examination, using frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain specimens.
  • Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by the pathologist.
  • Performs embedding, cutting, and staining of tissues and pathology specimens received.
  • Performs basic histology special stains using manual or automated methods as appropriate.
  • Maintains equipment in histology as required.
  • Performs calibration and troubleshooting on test systems and instruments.
  • Cleans and maintains adequate laboratory supplies and work areas.
  • Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
  • Performs general histological duties as well as cytology specimen prep work.
  • May complete High Complexity Testing as outlined in 42 CFR 493.1489.
  • Analyzes and records data.
  • Assists in the proficiency testing program in the lab.
  • Maintains competencies and continuing education to keep informed of new developments in field.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
