Requirements

  • Meet Qualifications for CLIA High Complexity Testing Personnel (§ 493.1489 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications)
  • Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution OR at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that includes either twenty-four (24) semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR twenty-four (24) semester hours of science courses (including six (6) semester hours of chemistry, six (6) semester hours of biology, and twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination)
  • HT(ASCP) certification or registry eligible
  • Previous experience in an anatomic pathology and histology laboratory

  • Training to be approved by the Lab Director for gastrointestinal biopsy and polyp specimens

Responsibilities

  • Specimen accessioning
  • Grossing (prosecting) gastrointestinal biopsy and polyp specimens
  • Tissue processing
  • Embedding
  • Microtomy (preparing precision cuts/sections)
  • Performing routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures
  • Performing special stains
  • Operating H&E autostainer
  • Operating instrumentation for immunohistochemical stains
  • Maintaining stock of necessary reagents
  • Maintaining equipment, instruments, and cleanliness of working area
  • Assisting with retrieving blocks and slides
  • Filing slides and blocks
  • Assisting in data entry with the lab LIS system
  • Complying with all state, federal, CLIA, CAP, and other professional regulations, as well as department rules, policies, and procedural manuals
  • Adhering to safety regulations, including OSHA and regulatory requirements, to maintain a safe laboratory environment and meet accreditation standards
