About The Position

The Whaley House Historyteller is responsible for bringing the history and mystery of the Whaley House Museum to life in a respectful, accurate, and engaging way. The role requires a love for history, a good sense of fun, and a desire to entertain, aligning with the mission to be 'The Nation's Storyteller'. Guests will judge the company based on the performance of the Historyteller.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and in groups over long periods of time within the scope of established rules and regulations.
  • Ability to learn stage direction and memorize historical details provided in a scripted story and relay scripted story in an entertaining manner, in front of an audience.
  • Ability to be heard in a loud, audible voice without amplification by an audience of up to 30 people.
  • Ability to give a scripted tour in the time allowed.
  • Ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking the time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Must pass pre-employment background check and substance abuse testing.
  • Have a passion for helping people and making their San Diego experience a memorable one.

Nice To Haves

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Strong interest in history is preferred.
  • Bilingual or American Sign Language interpreter a plus.

Responsibilities

  • In a loud, audible voice, without amplification, present accurate historical information in an entertaining manner, several times a work shift for an audience of up to 30 people.
  • Portray historical character in costume, either based upon a real person or composited of real persons to entertain and teach or interpret local history.
  • Study and rehearse the script to learn and memorize lines and cues as directed.
  • Use props as directed.
  • Remain on the tour schedule when performing, ensuring the tour does not run short of or over-scheduled time.
