About The Position

St. Mark's School is seeking a passionate History and Social Sciences Teacher to join their dynamic department. This role involves engaging students in understanding the forces, people, and places that shape our world through inquiry, discussion, and critical analysis. The position offers an opportunity to work with motivated students and contribute to a collaborative community. Beyond classroom teaching, faculty members serve as advisors, coaches, and mentors, fully engaging in residential school life. The teacher will report to the Head of the History and Social Sciences Department and will be responsible for designing engaging learning experiences, fostering critical thinking, creating an inclusive classroom, providing feedback, collaborating on curriculum, and supporting students academically and personally. This role also includes active participation in community life, such as coaching, leading co-curricular activities, and participating in weekend events.

Requirements

  • Strong content knowledge in history, human geography, and the social sciences
  • Enthusiasm for teaching adolescents via student-centered, active learning activities and by fostering intellectual engagement
  • Ability to teach inclusively and connect effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and learning profiles
  • Creativity, flexibility, and responsiveness in the classroom
  • Enthusiastic collaboration with colleagues and positive contribution to a team-oriented environment
  • Warmth, empathy, and high expectations when working with students
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Comfort using educational technology and digital tools to support teaching and learning
  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Geography, Education, or a related field required
  • Secondary school teaching experience (2+ years preferred)
  • Experience teaching U.S. History, World History, Human Geography, or related courses

  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Experience working in a boarding school, residential, or student-life setting preferred

Responsibilities

  • Teach introductory through advanced levels of History to students in grades 9 through 12
  • Design engaging and developmentally appropriate learning experiences that foster critical thinking, discussion, and analytical skills
  • Create an inclusive classroom environment that supports a diverse community of learners
  • Provide meaningful feedback that encourages student growth and intellectual curiosity
  • Collaborate with department colleagues on curriculum development, course design, and innovative teaching practices
  • Serve as an advisor and mentor, supporting students academically and personally throughout their St. Mark’s experience
  • Engage fully in community life, including coaching or leading co-curricular activities during two seasons each year, participating in weekend activities and events, and more
  • Work thoughtfully with students and colleagues in ways that strengthen the inclusive and relational culture of the School
