About The Position

This is a standard position description involving the preservation and conservation of historical and archaeological properties, buildings and documents as it relates to the history and culture of the Virgin Islands. Work of this nature includes research, field investigations, preparation of reports and implementation of any program or project which carries out such work.

Requirements

  • An Associate degree in social science or any related field.
  • OR High school and at least two year's experience working in the areas of social science, history, archeology or any other related field.
  • Knowledge of the history and culture of the Virgin Islands.
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, archeological principles and theories pertaining to cultural remains.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with all persons during the course of work.

Responsibilities

  • Compiles documents based on research relative to historic buildings, sites, structures, mapping and photographic inventory, to be inserted on a National Register form.
  • Locates various properties, buildings etc. on the map for possible inclusion on the National Register District.
  • Makes photographs so authentication can be established in the event of loss of records, documents etc.
  • Compiles a local inventory of historic sites in the Virgin Islands for inclusion in the V. I. Registry.
  • Makes recommendations as to how the property may be restored.
  • Conducts hearings so that the public can provide input as to the various historic sites found in the Virgin Islands, before a final inclusion can be made on the Registry and Comprehensive Plan.
  • Visits public and private schools, community organizations to make them aware of the different areas of historic interest in the Virgin Islands.
  • Conducts walking tours as part of this program.
  • Prepares newsletters for public distribution, which provides information concerning historic matters.
  • Prepares monthly and quarterly reports showing work in progress.
  • Performs any other tasks that are job related.
