About The Position

The Historic Carpenter is responsible for the preservation/restoration efforts of their assigned scope of work. The Historic Carpenter will support the In-charge or Project foreman by effectively communicating their needs for each assigned task, if any and deliver uncompromising quality.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of Historic Carpentry
  • General knowledge and skill set of framing carpentry
  • General knowledge and skill set of paint grade finish carpentry
  • Ability to create simple square, level, and plumb structures from drawings or existing conditions
  • Working knowledge of all types of window sashes, jambs, and their parts. (Friction, single hung, double hung, casement, & etc)
  • Must be able to pass a background check and pre-employment drug screen, including random drug screens after employment starts

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Drivers License preferred but not required
  • Must be willing to travel at times

Responsibilities

  • Preservation/restoration efforts of their assigned scope of work.
  • Support the In-charge or Project foreman by effectively communicating their needs for each assigned task.
  • Deliver uncompromising quality.
  • Prepare material to be installed by squaring the wood or cutting it to the require widths and/or lengths.
  • Repair/replace simple structural wood members.
  • Remove old coatings down to bare material with little to no damage to historic wooden fabric.
  • Remove and catalog historic windows, doors, and wooden fabric; removing with little to no damaged to the historic wooden fabric and recording the location, condition, and hardware to be reinstalled.
  • Correct improperly functioning windows and doors.
  • Install dutchman repairs by efficiently replacing a damaged piece of material with a good piece of matching material.
  • Install epoxy repairs, using the specified products to consolidate rotted/damaged wood and use the specified products to fill in the rotted/damaged wood.
  • Dissemble and reassemble historic windows with little to no damage to existing fabric.
  • Install replacement glass into a historic window using a glazing putty.
  • Apply finishes via brush, roller, or sprayer with proficiency.
  • Create profile drawings for millwork, providing simple drawing with measurements of existing conditions to clearly communicate the existing fabric.
  • Calculate a material list with quantities of what is needed for the assigned scope of work.
