About The Position

Histopathology Technologists play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of disease by turning tissue samples into microscope slides. Assumes accountability for a group of patients tests for designated time frame and provides a single standard of quality to these tests via independent judgment standard operating procedures instrumentation and positive interaction with other health care team members.

Requirements

  • Must be a Registered Histology Technician (ASCP) or be eligible for such registration
  • Have a high school education and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Histology Technician
  • Have a minimum of one year’s training under the direction of a registered Histology Technologist.
  • Spatial ability is required to perceive three-dimensional and geometric relationships when cutting paraffin blocks and embedding molds.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate the micro-thin tissue sections and to mount onto microscope slides
  • Color discrimination required to verify diagnostic quality of staining processes in order that essential features of tissue sections can be properly defined
  • Associate degree in related field is required

Responsibilities

  • Turning tissue samples into microscope slides.
  • Receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist.
  • Logging, batching, and cutting, mounting and staining procedures.
  • Sorting, logging, and prioritizing tissue specimens received from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases.
  • Coordinating daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area with regard to routine procedures, special procedures, and the surgery schedule.
  • Producing accurate results and outcomes according to age-specific standard operating procedures.
  • Matching patient identifying information on specimens with the work document without clerical/data entry errors or omissions.
  • Coordinating simultaneous series of procedures with accuracy.
  • Consulting supervisor for additional assignments and following them to completion.
  • Completing patient and quality control procedures within defined time limits.
  • Interpreting patient quality control samples or procedures, determining whether they are abnormal or incorrect.
  • Taking appropriate action according to protocol.
  • Notifying supervisor when necessary.
  • Completing routing tasks without direct supervision.
  • Overseeing and/or performing preventive maintenance and documenting corrective actions taken.
  • Prioritizing workload in response to STAT requests according to protocol.
  • Learning new procedures and assignments within a mutually agreed-upon time frame.
  • Offering innovative solutions to allow for effective and effective delivery of laboratory services.
  • Maintaining neat, legible, and organized written work documents with appropriate dates/initials.
  • Adapting to modifications of work assignments and, when requested, adjusting personal schedule for rotating shifts Monday-Friday between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd depending on benefit of patient care needs.
