About The Position

Histology Technologist in the Department of Anatomic Pathology and Digital Analytics at Duke University Hospital. PRN, As Needed. Duke Health laboratories are College of American Pathologists accredited and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments certified. The multidisciplinary team is committed to serving the rare and complex testing needs of Duke Health patients by providing timely and accurate results, educating the next generation of laboratorians, scientists and physicians, and researching and developing the cutting-edge diagnostics of tomorrow.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology.
  • Must meet the CLIA/CAP Education Requirements established to perform high-complexity testing.
  • One year lab experience with BS/BA in Science.
  • No experience needed for NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences) Program.
  • Demonstrated competency in histological laboratory skills.
  • Ability to perform assigned tasks on routine and special material.

  • Certification Eligible (must obtain HTL certification in 18 months (about 1 and a half years)).

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and special paraffin sections of surgical and autopsy tissue for microscopic examination in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Examine and describe routine surgical specimens for histologic preparation.
  • Prepare equipment and reagents for processing, embedding, microtome cutting and mounting of tissue; perform routine and special staining techniques.
  • Label, file, discard and maintain records of tissue samples and containers, tissue processing cassettes, final paraffin blocks and slides.
  • Label and record slides of specimens received; provide specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the pathologist.
  • Obtain and log specimens from the operating rooms and other areas as required.
  • Perform frozen cryostat sectioning.
  • Set up equipment, instruments, reagents and apparatus for specific laboratory techniques.
  • Perform various Quality Control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Utilize various hospital information systems and software.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
