Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Histology 5-7 years
  • Demonstrated competency in histotechnology methods and techniques in Fixation, Microtomy, Processing, and Staining.
  • Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as laboratory reports.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
  • Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment in a professional area.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others' workflow.

Responsibilities

  • Performs histological procedures for pathological diagnosis.
  • Prepares tissue specimens using technical Laboratory procedures including special techniques, abnormal findings, and stat requests within established time limits.
  • Completes technical laboratory procedures on a timely basis according to departmental regulations, CAP requirements, DNV and other MH standards of Laboratory analysis.
  • Follows established protocol or consults supervisor on difficult procedures and abnormal findings.
  • Determines acceptability of and reviews results for accuracy and corrects errors before presenting completed specimens to pathologist.
  • Participates in quality monitoring and evaluation activities and demonstrates initiative by suggesting or helping implement measures to ensure hospital, CAP, DNV, and other quality standards are met.
  • Performs preventative and routine maintenance, quality control tests as indicated by department policies.
  • Performs with appropriate frequency and documents results of quality control tests as required by regulatory agencies demonstrating appropriate corrective action for quality control failures.
  • Performs with appropriate frequency and documents instrument calibration and method validation at required intervals.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement of professional competency.
  • Participates in or conducts as requested in-service education for department or hospital staff.
  • Attends elective educational offerings to enhance professional performance.
