About The Position

The Histology Specialist maintains competence in every aspect of Histology and acts in place of the supervisor when necessary. This position provides technical expertise and leadership to develop, perform and troubleshoot all histologic staining procedures to include specialized histology processes. The Histology Specialist is responsible for the overall operation and organization of Special Histology (Immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, Immunofluorescence and other specialized procedures) including validation studies, maintenance of controls, antibodies and other reagents. They will maintain an accurate list of approved antibodies and their availability, ensuring appropriate notification to staff and physicians and that all are set up in the computer system for ordering. The role is responsible for the maintenance and routine evaluation of technical quality and stain quality for all of Histology, including routine H&E, special stains, IHCs, -ish, IFs and other specialized stains. Maintenance of new processes and quality improvement procedures in the Special Histology area of the lab, including updating procedures as necessary. Preparation, maintenance of slides and required documentation for the CAP Inter-laboratory Comparison program proficiency testing and surveys. Maintenance of all equipment, including documentation and validations. Organization and billing of research requests and other outside technical requests. Providing technical assistance to Electron Microscopy including renal triage as needed. The specialist will act in place of the Histology Supervisor or Section Manager as needed, assist in the selection, development and training of histology employees, and with employee evaluations. They will monitor and ensure a safe working environment and refer suggestions and observations to the Histology Supervisor and/or Section Manager. The specialist will also supplement the technical staff at the bench when appropriate, assisting with gross dissection, embedding, cutting, preparation of special stains, immunohistochemistry, -ish and immunofluorescence as necessary. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

High School graduate or equivalent or higher degree with at least 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of academic credit of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both disciplines)
Must be HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) eligible. HT (ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) must be obtained within 2 years of hire/transfer.
8 years of laboratory experience required.
5 of the 8 years must be Immunohistochemistry experience.
QIHC certification will substitute for one year of the required experience.
