About The Position

Under the direction of the Primary Investigator and Lab Manager, the Histology Research Technician supports the overall clinical research program by receiving research specimens, verifying their identification and the information on the written request, cutting and staining tissue samples as requested by researchers, and sending specimens to appropriate testing areas. The role also involves organizing and maintaining study files and materials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical or basic science discipline, or equivalent formal training in recognized fields of specialization.
  • Use of specialized lab equipment to perform daily lab activities included but not limited to cutting, staining and maintaining tissue samples.
  • Utilize the laboratory information system (LIS), Microsoft Office and other information systems to generate and enter accurate data.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, residents, staff and other college and hospital departments.
  • Perform basic and advanced keyboarding skills needed for a highly computerized laboratory environment.
  • Verify that demographic information on specimen corresponds to that on the test order requisition.
  • Verify specimen acceptability according to laboratory procedures.
  • Identify specimens to be shared with other laboratory departments and follows appropriate interdepartmental procedures for shared specimens.
  • Accession test requests into the research laboratory testing process.
  • Assist in maintaining, ordering and restocking supplies.
  • Contact attending physicians, residents, study sponsor as necessary to clarify unclear requests.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Maintain records and logs.
  • Maintain and update files on all past and present research studies according to the applicable standards.
  • Serve as courier between laboratories and offices.
  • Organize, file and re-file study materials (binders, records, blocks and slides).

Responsibilities
