About The Position

Supports the diagnostic evaluation of tissue by histological procedures. Performs histological duties within the guidelines established by histology laboratory (clinic or stand-alone laboratory). This role involves performing a variety of specialized, difficult, delicate, and complex chemical, histopathological, or immunologic procedures. Responsibilities include specimen collection and triage, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy (cutting), routine staining, special stain techniques, immunohistochemical techniques, instrumentation maintenance, reagent preparation, and general safety adherence. The technician will also be involved in grossing specimens fixed in 10% formalin and specimens submitted in Michel’s Fixative for Immunofluorescence processing, including nail processing and decalcification. Quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products are also a key part of this role.

Requirements

  • Minimum one year of work experience in a medical office, required.

  • Mathematical and/or analytical ability for basic to intermediate problem solving

Responsibilities

  • Receives, accepts, and recognizes specimens that arrive in the laboratory, checking for proper identification and fixative.
  • Accessions specimens with proper patient information.
  • Implements appropriate procedures during tissue processing and prepares and maintains the tissue processor.
  • Recognizes adequacy of processing, determines correct mold size for the specimen, and maintains accurate identification of the specimen.
  • Identifies and orients specimen correctly.
  • Operates a microtome with correct settings, alignments, and knife angles to ensure optimum sectioning.
  • Determines block orientation and facing to obtain a full representative section and selects the correct procedure regarding section thickness.
  • Selects appropriate slides for specific stains and maintains accurate tissue identification.
  • Selects appropriate stains and chemicals to perform H & E staining procedures and prepares and maintains stains and other solutions.
  • Demonstrates the ability to determine acceptable and unacceptable staining and identifies and corrects problem areas.
  • Selects correct mounting medium for each type of stain.
  • Identifies proper control and stains for demonstrating specific tissue constituents and pathogens, and demonstrates the ability to determine acceptable vs. unacceptable staining.
  • Identifies and corrects problems that result in inadequate or improperly stained tissue.
  • Identifies the proper control for Immunohistochemistry and Immunofluorescence to be used for specific antibodies.
  • Determines appropriate antigen retrieval procedure for each antibody.
  • Maintains and services instruments according to established protocols.
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate or use instruments for their intended purpose.
  • Monitors and documents instrument performance, checks for malfunctions, and identifies the need for repair.
  • Prepares reagents according to established procedures and records quality control data for each reagent.
  • Selects proper storage and preservation for all reagents and recognizes reagent malfunction and the need to replace reagents.
  • Demonstrates correct safety practices, recognizes and corrects dangerous situations, and adheres to all OSHA regulations and universal precautions.
  • Demonstrates proper handling of chemicals and biohazard materials and maintains knowledge of OSHA regulations and universal precautions.
  • Assists in the evaluation of new procedures and equipment for possible adoption by the laboratory environment.
  • Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports.
  • Performs grossing of specimens fixed in 10% formalin and specimens submitted in Michel’s Fixative for Immunofluorescence processing.
  • Performs nail processing and decalcification, selecting appropriate specimens for decal procedures and using Potassium Hydroxide for nail specimens.
  • Determines the appropriate degree of decalcification.
  • Prepares slides with permanent labels and files them appropriately.
  • Adheres to all safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities while supporting a culture of high quality and great customer service.
  • Performs other duties that may be necessary or in the best interest of the organization.
