About The Position

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital facility is home to the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, an advanced heart disease diagnostic and treatment facility, as well as a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services including women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. Our Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center delivers comprehensive and specialized care for patients with traumatic injuries. The Stroke Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is designated by the New York State Department of Health as a Primary Stroke Center, with expert neurologists available to provide treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additionally, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk has multiple outpatient sites, including an outpatient wound care center, a hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices. We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Histology/Cyto Clerk - Histology - Per Diem - Clinical Labs-Histology - Variable Days/Shifts. In this role, the successful candidate Under general supervision, and according to established policies and procedures, performs a variety of clerical duties as required by the Histology/Cytology section. Types, files and maintains neat and accurate records, while accommodating a fluctuating workload.

  • General Typing and filing knowledge
  • Knowledge of universal precautions

Responsibilities

  • Accession patient samples into A/P program.
  • Maintain, update and distribute all necessary reports.
  • Organize time to accommodate changing workflow.
  • Recognize patient confidentiality issues and fax results to responsible physician only.
  • Obtain and relay information in clear and accurate manner.
  • Monitor office and department supplies.
  • Organize, verify proper preservatives and process specimen types accordingly.
  • Understand clinical relevance in all areas of responsibility.
  • Organize work so others can take over in their absence.
  • Perform universal precautions with each function.
  • Perform all tasks accurately.
  • Relay any inconsistency in identification or labeling to supervisor.
  • Accession and process specimens in an organized and timely fashion for gross examination.
  • Follow proper procedures for identifying, verifying and transporting patient samples from the Operating Room and Ambulatory Surgery Area.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Listen attentively and follow direction.
  • Demonstrate proper telephone techniques and etiquette.
  • Effectively utilize the computer to process specimens, reports results and access information.
  • Communicate ideas and suggestions with a positive intent.
  • Convey respect for the profession.

  • Understand and identify appropriate criteria for accepting specimens.
  • Accurately label cytology specimens.
  • Maintain records of all positive cytology cases.
  • Maintain and update records and files.
  • Distribute reports to proper areas.
  • Update all necessary logs to conform to third-party regulatory agencies.
  • Handle routine use of Reference Lab Computer System.
  • Maintain a consistent pattern of attendance.
  • Report to assigned area on time for scheduled shift.
  • Adhere to hospital/department dress code. Arrive to work appropriately dressed, well groomed and neat.
  • Complete all hospital requirements at designated time (i.e. annual assessment, educational, MedNetTra).
  • Follow call-in procedure when sick, late or absent.
