About The Position

A Histology Assistant performs specimen accessioning, files slides and tissue blocks, answers phone calls, prepares specimens to be sent to reference laboratories, accesses PAPs for send-out, performs weekly instrument maintenance, handles emailing/phoning concerning order issues, manages recycling and discarding of specimens, and cleans glassware, dishes, and instruments. The role involves recording status and collection dates/times in the Laboratory Information System, maintaining the assigned work area with disinfections and stocking supplies, and verifying specimens using at least two patient identifiers (name, DOB, MR#). Responsibilities also include adhering to recycling procedures, managing send-out procedures for multiple reference laboratories, accessioning PAPs for send-out, maintaining specimen integrity through aseptic technique and following department procedures, observing isolation procedures, and maintaining a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by complying with legal regulations and standards. The assistant resolves unusual test orders by contacting physicians, pathologists, nurses, or other histology personnel, referring unresolved orders back to the originator, and notifying the coordinator or manager of unresolved orders. The role serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC and CAP standards. Additional duties include assisting with histology clerical work, answering phones, registering patients when appropriate, receiving specimens, performing pre-analytical preparation for samples including send-outs, and performing pending log resolution. The position also involves maintenance of histology instruments and cleaning of glassware, dishes, and instruments, working under the supervision of a Histologist.

Requirements

  • Entry Level
  • High School or Equivalent (GED)
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, hear, and comprehend the English language.

  • Medical terminology training is preferred.
