About The Position

The Health Information Management Specialist is responsible for learning and providing assistance to users of the electronic medical record system. This role involves demonstrating competence in critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and technical skills, ensuring safe and efficient patient care. The specialist will gain in-depth knowledge of HIM departmental systems supporting the electronic medical record (EMR) through formal and on-the-job training, handling user questions promptly, and reinforcing training. They will act as a liaison between Health Information Management and the UKH Healthcare Information Technical Services (HITS) Department for application design, testing, and issue resolution during implementations and post-go-live support. Responsibilities include analyzing workflows, data collection, auditing internal processes, reporting issues to management and HITS, and assisting with troubleshooting EMR interface errors. The role also involves educating physicians on EMR processes related to chart documentation and completion, performing other HIM duties such as patient indexing, transcription processing, analysis, customer service, and release of information (ROI), and maintaining a high standard of quality and quantity. The individual must be able to perform the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • 2 or more years of HIM experience.
  • Prior experience with an electronic medical record (EMR), Epic EMR desirable.
  • Must be accurate and detail oriented.
  • Possess excellent listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be highly organized, able to work independently and be team-oriented.
  • Must have the initiative to continually improve technical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Handles questions from users and responds in a timely manner.
  • Re-enforces training to users.
  • Acts as a liaison between Health Information Management and the UKH Healthcare Information Technical Services (HITS) Department for application design, testing, and issue resolution for implementations and post go-live support.
  • Analyzes workflows and data collection.

  • Reports issues needing resolution to Management and HITS.
