About The Position

The Town of Essex is recruiting a Highway Superintendent for its Highway Public Works team. Reporting directly to the Public Works Director, the Highway Superintendent plans, organizes, and directs field operations for the Highway and Vehicle Maintenance divisions of the Public Works Department. The role requires independent judgment to evaluate problems and organize and implement solutions effectively and efficiently. The Superintendent supervises Highway Foremen and all highway employees and has frequent routine contact with the general public, vendors, state government, and other municipalities. Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; hours may vary based on municipal needs. Continuing education may be required. The position is open until filled.

Requirements

An associate’s degree in a relevant area of expertise.
Ten years of experience in highway, water/sewer, maintenance, construction procedures and methods, and equipment operations.
Proven ability to supervise and lead others.
Three winter seasons of experience performing winter plowing with a heavy-duty dump truck equipped with a plow or wing.
A valid commercial driver’s license; Class B or higher is preferred.

A commercial driver’s license of at least Class B is preferred.
