About The Position

GFT is seeking a Highway Project Engineer to join their Transportation group. This role involves working on transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity. The team excels in resilient, sustainable design and construction, delivering innovative solutions for modern, multimodal roadway systems to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable travel. The Project Engineer will contribute to the design and development of roadway and highway projects across New Jersey, supporting project execution for clients like NJDOT, NJTA, and other area agencies. This role requires working under the direction of senior engineers and project managers, taking ownership of design tasks, preparing plans and technical documents, supporting project management, and ensuring timely and quality project delivery. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, guidance to junior staff, and continuous growth in technical expertise and client-facing experience are key aspects of this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in New Jersey, or ability to obtain through reciprocity within one year
  • 8-10 years of engineering experience with broad knowledge of transportation design and strong technical skills in highway design
  • Proficient in MicroStation, OpenRoads, and Microsoft Office
  • NJDOT or NJTA design experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D
  • New Jersey client relationships

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering design tasks for roadway projects from concept development to final design, including construction support
  • Develop plans, specifications, cost estimates, reports, and prepare final bid packages
  • Establish working relationships and contact with client technical staff and project managers
  • Provide engineering design services on traditional design-bid-build projects and design-build highway projects
  • Manage and mentor junior engineers on project assignments
  • Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subconsultants, and client managers
  • Coordinate the planning, staffing, scheduling, budget management, quality control, of subconsultants and internal technical and support staff
  • Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost and scheduling performance
  • Lead projects and complete tasks within schedule and budget with teams comprised of different disciplines
  • Project QA/QC
  • Assist project managers with other various tasks
