This position performs labor, highway construction, and maintenance work to keep the roadways and roadsides safe and in good repair, including general maintenance of highways and bridges; performs traffic control flagging; and operates light and utility equipment and light and heavy trucks. The role involves providing positive leadership in department safety and training activities, ensuring on-site safety practices are implemented. Responsibilities include performing physical labor in constructing, maintaining, and repairing highways, bridges, and rights-of-way, such as shoveling, raking, cutting brush, patching pavements, and mowing roadsides. The position requires skillful operation of various highway department equipment, including crawler tractors, loaders, excavators, graders, and paving machines. Additionally, it involves performing flagging and traffic control, assisting in bridge repair, reading construction plans, ensuring proper work zone setup and environmental protections, and installing/maintaining highway appurtenances like guardrails and signs. The role also includes operating light equipment, snow plowing, ice removal, transporting equipment with heavy-duty trucks, completing reports, maintaining buildings and grounds, performing daily equipment inspections and minor repairs, and adhering to all safety regulations. The position may require reporting to work for after-hours needs, performing emergency repairs, and other duties as assigned.
