About The Position

This position involves performing a variety of critical duties related to highway maintenance and repair. Responsibilities include operating trucks and equipment safely, performing manual labor such as shoveling and raking various materials, erecting and removing snow fences and signs, sweeping surfaces, and using tools like picks and drills. The role also entails maintaining and cleaning equipment and facilities, performing minor equipment maintenance, and completing accurate records of work performed. Safety rules and guidelines must be followed, and duties may include plowing snow, applying chlorides and abrasives, and maintaining grounds adjacent to highway facilities. Specific highway maintenance tasks include crack filling, pothole repair, tree and brush cutting, and operating equipment like wood chippers and road saws. The position requires the ability to work in adverse weather conditions, under traffic, for extended hours, and cope with distractions. It also requires the ability to work semi-independently, organize time efficiently, and handle objects up to 75 pounds. There is an interest in developing expertise in operating various heavy equipment. Willingness to be assigned to different garages throughout Fond du Lac County and to work overtime as needed, while being within a 45-minute radius of the assigned garage, is also required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain variety of vehicles, trucks (tri-axle, quad-axle, 5 yard, etc.), tractors, mowers, chain saws, weed trimmers and light equipment and trailers.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform highway maintenance including manual labor, tree and brush removal, crack filling, pot hole repair, asphalt installation, concrete installation, sign repair, line striping, flagging, landscaping, culvert installation and maintenance, plowing, debris pickup, cleaning, etc.
  • Ability to operate variety of hand tools including shovels, rakes, brooms, chain saws, weed wackers, chop saws, concrete saws, drills, etc.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and temperatures, under traffic, for extended hours, on holidays, and cope with distracting vibrations, fumes, dust, etc.
  • Ability to organize and maintain accurate and complete time cards.
  • Demonstrated ability to comply with appropriate safety regulations.
  • Ability to work semi-independently making sound decisions using good judgment.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with co-workers, county officials and officers, general public, etc.
  • Ability to budget time and schedule work to efficiently complete tasks.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stoop, lift, carry; push, pull, and otherwise move objects up to 75 pounds regularly, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
  • Valid Commercial Driver License Class A with endorsement N (Tanker) is required. As well as the ability to legally operate CMV's with Air Brakes, Manual Transmissions, Tractor/Trailers and Tank Cargo without restrictions such as L, Z, E, or O.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug and alcohol test are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate from high school or G.E.D. preferred.
  • Be interested in developing expertise in operation of various heavy equipment, including dozers, motor graders, excavators, gradall, paver, etc.
  • Willing to be assigned out of the various garages throughout Fond du Lac County.
  • Willing to work overtime as needed and be within ¾ hour (45 minutes) from Fond du Lac County Highway Garage assigned.
  • Previous experience involving manual labor, concrete work, asphalt work, operating dump trucks and heavy equipment, as well as demonstrated familiarity and skill in use of a variety of hand and power tools is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate trucks and equipment safely and efficiently per departmental rules and equipment and truck guidelines.
  • Perform manual labor work, shovel and lute/rake gravel, dirt, concrete and asphalt, erect and remove snow fences and signs, sweep surfaces, pick up brush and wood limbs, use picks, plate compactors, drills, etc. Pick up litter and debris within and on highways; work independently or with a work crew.
  • Maintain, clean, and wash equipment, vehicles, and facilities.
  • Perform minor equipment and truck maintenance, change oil, air tires, grease, and fuel, and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, works with the mechanics as necessary. Perform daily walk around inspections of vehicles and equipment assigned.
  • Complete and submit accurate and legible records of time, location, materials, and equipment used on each project.
  • Follow safety rules and guidelines as established by, but not limited to County and/or State/Federal law.
  • Plow snow from highways, applying chlorides and abrasives as necessary per County guidelines and State regulations.
  • Maintain grounds adjacent to highway facilities including planting, weed control, cutting grass, landscaping, etc.
  • Perform highway maintenance including crack filling, pot hole repair, cutting trees and brush using chain saws, using a wood chipper and road saws, flagging, weed wacking, concrete and asphalt cutting, air hammering, cleaning debris, etc.
