About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking to fill a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 position at Snoqualmie Pass. This role supports the safe and efficient movement of people, goods, and services along Interstate 90 and surrounding state highways through year-round highway maintenance and snow and ice response activities. Responsibilities include operating heavy equipment, performing roadway and drainage maintenance, establishing traffic control, and responding to emergencies in severe weather and hazardous roadway conditions. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong highway maintenance and equipment operation skills, sound judgment, a commitment to safety and teamwork, and the ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment while supporting WSDOT’s mission to provide safe and reliable transportation systems for the people of Washington.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience performing routine and emergency maintenance on highways, roadways, and related infrastructure including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal.
  • Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
  • Skilled in operating and maintaining heavy equipment (e.g. frontend loaders, tractor mowers, sweepers, flushers, truck-mounted attenuators, backhoe, vactor, 26,000 -56,000 GVW Dump truck with snowplow and chemical deicer attachments).
  • Proven ability to supervise personnel engaged in snow and ice removal operations, ensuring safe and effective performance in adverse weather conditions during both day and nighttime hours.
  • Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
  • Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
  • Ability to use electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating.
  • Proficient in standard computer applications including Microsoft Office and email communication.
  • Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.

  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N endorsement and without airbrakes restriction.
  • A valid CDL Medical card.
  • Washington State Flagging Card, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment.
  • First Aid Certification, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Washington State Department of Agriculture Pesticide and Structural Pest Inspector (SPI) applicators licensure within one (1) year of employment.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays to meet business needs.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to travel in snow covered roads, ice, closed sections of roadway, and extreme winter weather.

  • Ability to interpret, comprehend, and implement plans, policies and procedures in daily operations that include snow and ice control, traffic control, and roadway safety.

Responsibilities

  • Operate dump trucks with plow and sander units to perform snow and ice control on interstate and secondary highways, frontage roads, and snow parks.
  • Establish temporary work zones and perform traffic control operations using signs, attenuators, flagging equipment, and other traffic control devices.
  • Maintain drainage systems including ditches, culverts, catch basins, channels, bridge drains, and cross drains using manual and mechanical methods.
  • Repair third-party damage to highway infrastructure including guardrail, fencing, signs, delineators, and other roadway features.
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment including loaders, sweepers, mowers, excavators, dump trucks, truck/trailer combinations, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Perform roadway repair activities including asphalt patching, crack sealing, concrete panel replacement, and material hauling operations.
  • Perform litter removal, rest area cleaning, and other maintenance duties involving exposure to hazardous materials and biohazards.
  • Attend safety meetings and training and complete required maintenance, inventory, and deicer records using electronic systems and iPads.
