About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a motivated Highway Maintenance Worker 1 for the Rest Areas in Everett, WA. This role provides clean and operational facilities that offer the traveling public a safe place to rest and use facilities, contributing to reduced driver fatigue and providing opportunities for vehicle inspections. The safety of the traveling public and fellow employees is a high priority.

Requirements

  • Maintenance Experience: Experience performing maintenance activities in a related field of work
  • Valid Driver’s License, Washington State Flagging Card, CPR-AED First Aid card
  • Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Takes action to meet the needs of others.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to respond to assigned duty station with 45 minutes of an afterhours callout.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.

Nice To Haves

  • Landscaping Experience: Experience performing landscaping activities such as mowing, pruning, and fertilizing
  • Basic Building Maintenance: Knowledge and experience performing minor repairs and maintenance of public buildings, including janitorial duties and plumbing/electrical systems.
  • Cleaning Practices and Chemical Safety: Knowledge of cleaning products, proper mixing procedures, and safe application techniques to effectively clean and maintain public facilities while following safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Technology and Administrative Proficiency: Experience using computers, Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook), and mobile devices such as iPads to document work activities, communicate effectively, and complete required reports and records.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain assigned rest areas to meet the needs and satisfaction of the traveling public.
  • Perform janitorial services within facilities: clean, scrub, and disinfect rest area facilities (toilets, urinals, sinks, drinking fountains, partitions, floors, walls, etc.); remove graffiti; keep paper products and hand soap dispensers full; pick up litter and empty trash receptacles; clean trash receptacles; dust furniture, window, and door ledges; wash windows; sweep and clean walkways, parking areas, and picnic areas.
  • Perform daily chlorination and water meter reading; obtain public drinking water samples from well and submit to the assigned county testing site per regular schedule.
  • Clean and maintain recreational vehicle dump stations; ensure they are in good working order.
  • Inspect assigned rest area for vandalism, abandoned vehicles, and unauthorized use (i.e., tents, open fires, or extended stay vehicles over allotted eight hours).
  • Maintain assigned rest area landscape: mow lawn areas (ride and push mowers); trim and prune shrubbery and trees; weed flower and shrub beds, maintain planted vegetation; fertilize and reseed damaged lawn areas; and apply pesticides.
  • Maintain public access areas, entries, and walkways during winter with de-icing agents, shovels, and snow removal equipment (i.e., snow blower).
  • Operate power tools and hand tool; operate class C equipment for maintenance operations.
  • Contribute to a strong culture of safety in the workplace: participate in monthly organizational meetings; prepare daily Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP); conduct monthly Safety Field Reviews using SIIRS (Safety Inspection and Incident Reporting System).
