About The Position

The selected candidate will be placed in the classification of Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) or Highway Technician 1 (HT1) based on their qualifications. This role serves the public by working to make Ohio roads safer. The position involves attending training to obtain a CDL license if not already held, and performing various highway maintenance activities. This includes flagging, pothole patching, repairing guardrails, litter pickup, mowing, and performing snow and ice operations. The State of Ohio is a drug-free workplace and prohibits the use of marijuana. This position may be subject to additional restrictions per the State of Ohio Drug-Free Workplace Policy (HR-39). All bargaining unit new hires must serve a one (1) year probationary period. The final candidate will undergo a criminal background check and a urinalysis to test for illegal drug use. This position is also subject to federal testing regulations which prohibit the use of marijuana, including medical marijuana. Selected applicants are required to register as a driver in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. This position could start as a night position.

Requirements

  • Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary.
  • Must obtain Class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction.
  • Highway Technician 1: Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & decimals, percentages & fractions; ability to read, write & speak common English vocabulary; 3 months training or 3 months experience in operation of basic equipment.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction.

Responsibilities

  • Serve the public and work to make the roads in Ohio safer.

  • Perform highway maintenance activities; including flagging, pothole patching, repairing guardrails, litter pickup, mowing.
