About The Position

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician to join their Maintenance Program in Lyman, Wyoming. This role involves performing various highway maintenance duties to ensure safe travel, including operating equipment, performing road repairs, and responding to weather-related conditions. The position is located in Lyman, a scenic town known for outdoor activities and historical sites, and offers the financial benefit of no state income tax. Requirements

Must have the ability to obtain water certifications if necessary
Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving
Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification
Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures
Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
Knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem-axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
Knowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid, and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
Knowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering)
0-1 year of relevant work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire
Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods
Work in adverse environmental conditions, which may include, but not be limited to, rain, snow, heat, and hail
Ability to walk for long periods on even and uneven ground
Work around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
Individuals in these positions must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Individuals in these must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.

Preference may be given to applicants who have a current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment.

Responsibilities

Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
Flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices under limited supervision
Operates heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks with augers, aerial lift equipment, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems for snow and ice removal
Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas, including performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
Communicates information to update others' status and/or process effectiveness
Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
Responsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment
