About The Position

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated Highway Maintenance Technician in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This role is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient transportation for the community. Requirements

  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion of Defensive Driving
  • Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification
  • Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
  • Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
  • Knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
  • Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem-axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
  • Knowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
  • 2-4 years of relevant work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of time
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions, which may include but not be limited to rain, snow, heat, and hail
  • Ability to walk long periods of time on even and uneven ground
  • Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
  • Must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call
  • Occasional overnight travel is required

Nice To Haves

  • Preference may be given to applicants who have a current Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment.
  • Individuals in these positions may be asked to obtain water certifications if necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
  • Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices under limited supervision
  • Operates heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks equipped with augers, aerial lift equipment, or plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from the roadway surface
  • Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
  • Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas, which may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
  • Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
  • Communicates information to update others on status and/or process effectiveness
  • Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and stays up-to-date on technological advances with specialized equipment
  • Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
  • Responsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment
