About The Position

Join FDOT and be part of the team that works as one to improve safety, enhance mobility and inspire innovation in the Florida transportation system. This position will perform a variety of roadway maintenance activities on state roads throughout Polk County, including pothole repairs, shoulder work, tree trimming, sidewalk repairs, emergency response, etc. The Highway Maintenance Technician I supports the safety and functionality of Florida’s transportation system through hands-on fieldwork and dependable service. Through cooperation, coordination and collaboration among the OneFDOT team, you will be contributing to a strong and empowering culture of TRREC: Trust, Relationships, Respect, Empowerment, and Communication. Requirements

Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to lift, carry and handle up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
Ability to perform minor maintenance on vehicles.
Ability to operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
Must respond to emergencies.
Must be trained and maintain training certification from the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates.
Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
Must be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT).
Requires a Class E driver’s license.
Requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
Must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

Responsibilities

Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
Operates a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites.
Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment.
Cleans and washes equipment.
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic)
