About The Position

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Tech Coordinator to join their team. This role involves coordinating, directing, and participating in the maintenance, assembly, and installation of highway signs. Responsibilities include selecting materials and equipment, planning workloads and deadlines, maintaining operational records, and completing daily paperwork. With the required CDL permit or license, the position operates medium and heavy equipment, performs inspections, and conducts basic preventative maintenance. The role also includes manual labor on highways and bridges using various tools, motivating and training crew members (including Temporary Traffic Control procedures), communicating regularly with staff, and assisting in evaluating performance. Requirements

Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency. One year experience in infrastructure construction or maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
Possess a valid Class "E" driver’s license.
Obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position.
Obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
Must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) while on-duty status, consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
Obtains and maintains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level.
Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and use of medium/heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
Knowledge of crew leading principles and practices.
Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
Skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on medium/heavy equipment and vehicles.
Skilled in filling out reports and forms and maintaining accurate records.
Skilled in communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to train others.
Ability to read and understand job-related materials.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.

Ability to work independently and make job related decisions.
Must be United States (U.S.) citizens or lawfully authorized alien workers.
Must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse for pre-employment query.
Must have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
Must be registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS (for male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962).

Responsibilities

Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the chemical herbicide program and/or the assembly and erection of highway signs as needed.
Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
Maintains records of operation.
Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
Operates vehicles and a variety of medium and heavy equipment upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license.
Performs preventative maintenance and pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment operated.
Performs light maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
Performs manual labor in the maintenance of highways, bridges and other highway facilities while utilizing a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools.
Motivates crew members to improve the quality of work performed and assists in the evaluation of others.
Communicate on a regular basis with employees both individually and in crew meetings.
Trains crew members in basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
