About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking two skilled and motivated leaders to join their team as Area 1 Highway Maintenance Supervisors in Spokane, WA. This role is responsible for leading the people, resources, and operations that keep 385 lane miles of roadway, 19 major interchanges, and 53 bridges safe and reliable. The supervisor will oversee day-to-day highway maintenance operations, guide and develop maintenance teams, manage budgets and resources, and coordinate emergency response efforts.

Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge and ability to safely operate heavy equipment and perform roadway and roadside maintenance activities, including snow and ice control, traffic control, pavement repair, drainage maintenance, vegetation management, and related maintenance operations.
Ability to apply safe work practices, follow established procedures, and effectively operate equipment in a variety of roadway, weather, and work-zone conditions.
Demonstrated ability to consistently apply safe work practices, identify hazards, follow established safety procedures, and promote a culture of safety while working in high-risk environments.
Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate the work of others by assigning tasks, providing instruction, monitoring work progress, mentoring employees, and promoting teamwork while maintaining positive working relationships.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize competing work, allocate personnel and equipment, manage multiple maintenance activities, and adjust priorities in response to emergencies.
Demonstrated ability to evaluate roadway conditions, assess risk, make sound operational decisions, and respond appropriately during emergencies.

Possession a class A CDL, endorsement N (Air Brake restriction removed), to include valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Possession of first Aid Certification, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Possession of or ability to obtain a Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License within twelve months of hire.
Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Ability to respond to assigned duty station with 45 minutes of an afterhours callout.
Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.

Responsibilities

Manage performance through shared vision, values, and accountability.
Work with employees to build a cohesive team culture grounded in our region’s core values, consistent practices, and structures.
Supervise, budget and schedule maintenance and specialty crews.
Oversee vegetation management, tree and brush removal, pesticide application, maintaining wetlands.
Oversee snow and ice control, highway safety features, guardrail and impact attenuator repair, sign replacement, pavement striping and marking.
Development of the annual maintenance plan including fund availability and staffing requirements.
Directs and is responsible for the acquisition of materials and supplies.
Inspect for illegal right-of-way encroachments, roadway safety maintenance needs and signing to ensure state standards and specifications are met.
Prioritize and assign work to Highway Maintenance Workers and crews, schedule equipment and materials as needed.
Conduct periodic crew safety and training meetings to ensure safe work practice and compliance with new regulations.
