Requirements

2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Technician
Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire
Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering)
0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Technician
Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire
Knowledge of highway maintenance operations
Knowledge of computers, basic office equipment, Gmail, and WYDOT databases/systems
Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
Knowledge of equipment maintenance, basic mechanical diagnosis, and repair procedures
Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
Knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem-axle trucks, loaders, and tractors; knowledge of specialized heavy equipment used in maintenance activities
Knowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid, and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities

Nice To Haves

Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License.
Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving.
Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification.
Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification.

Responsibilities

Safely operates and trains others to operate complex machinery in specialized maintenance applications
Leads the performance of daily maintenance tasks as assigned by the Highway Maintenance Supervisor I; provides regular work direction to the crew
Assists with tracking inventory, material usage, labor, and equipment mileage in the supervisor’s absence
Provides advice and assistance on repair procedures needed for highways, equipment, and buildings, and makes recommendations to the supervisor regarding any unplanned maintenance activities that may be needed
Serves as technical resource for the crew; identifies and corrects any maintenance activity not performed according to state and federal safety and/or quality standards.
Communicates project issues to the supervisor; proposes a new course of action to keep the project moving forward safely
Provides input to the supervisor regarding crew performance issues and successes observed in the field
Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas; this may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
Operates heavy equipment, including, but not limited to: single and tandem axle trucks equipped with an auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from the roadway surface
Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices; oversees on-the-road traffic control operations, including oversight of safety procedures and quality standards
Attends and completes all state and federal training required in order to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
