About The Position

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire Highway Maintainers. The successful candidate will, under direct supervision of the Freeway Sign Unit Chief and the day-to-day guidance of the Highway Maintenance Lead Worker, perform a variety of semiskilled tasks involving the fabrication, transportation, and installation of freeway sign overlays; reconstruction of damaged freeway sign panels; removal of existing freeway signs, installation of new signs; and replacement of raised pavement marker reflectors throughout the State. This role involves sorting, straightening, hydro stripping, and sanding sign returns from district yards, as well as resizing, shearing, punching, and radiusing aluminum used in the making of roadway signs. The position also includes operating CDL Class A licensed vehicles and assisting with the fabrication of highway signs.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
  • Requires possession of a Class “A” commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, and no airbrake restrictions.
  • Requires one year of driving experience immediately preceding appointment, free of incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation.
  • Requires successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing in compliance with USDOT standards which prohibit the use of cannabis.
  • Requires the ability to perform arduous labor outdoors in a variety of adverse conditions including, but not limited to, hot, cold, wet, windy, muddy, confined spaces, active construction sites, climbing steep terrain, roadways open to traffic and wading in water while dealing with adverse environmental conditions such as poisonous plants, animals, insects, rodents and snakes.
  • Requires the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions while maintaining productive working relationships.
  • This position is considered medium work as defined by the US Dept. of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Operations employees are subject to call at any hour of the day or night on any day of the year in order to respond to emergencies outside of normal work hours.
  • As a result, negotiated rate employees are required to work reasonable amounts of overtime when necessary.
  • Any bargaining unit employee who may be required to engage in a call out shall respond to the call as quickly as practicable but in no situation can the response time exceed 45 minutes.
  • Requires the ability to work at heights in a bucket truck up to 30 feet in the air.
  • Requires the ability to work on ladders up to 10 feet in the air.

Responsibilities

  • Rehabilitates, repairs, installs, or removes freeway-type signs on trusses over highways and on various supports adjacent to highways.
  • Works at the Highway Sign Shop using a variety of machinery to rehabilitate returned freeway and standard signs.
  • Operates CDL Class A licensed vehicles including maintenance trucks, materials-handling equipment, pavement marking equipment, as well as other equipment including air compressors, drills, rivet guns, hydraulic equipment, generators and other sign shop equipment used in the construction of signs and barricades.
  • Assists Silk Screen Operators with the fabrication of highway signs (“Work on the Board”).
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.
