About The Position

RS&H is seeking a visionary Highway Area Discipline Leader for its North Florida transportation business within its East Region Infrastructure Business Unit. This role involves leading transformative highway projects and driving the growth of a dynamic team, making a lasting impact on North Florida’s highways, championing innovation, and elevating careers in a leadership role. The Tallahassee Highway Area Discipline Leader (ADL) will be responsible for RS&H’s North Florida Highway practice, focusing on top-line growth and operational excellence. This includes leading a team of professionals, fostering a culture of engagement, empowerment, and continuous improvement, and ensuring client satisfaction and quality outcomes. The role also involves developing and retaining existing associates, recruiting new talent, and fostering a diverse knowledge of discipline principles. Collaboration with leaders, teams, and associates across the firm is essential for driving success, promoting teamwork, and coordinating resource levels to meet client needs and provide associates with diverse project responsibilities. The ADL will provide expertise on standards, quality assurance, and construction methods and materials, ensuring adherence to all client and regulatory requirements. Key responsibilities include strategic leadership, business development (cultivating client relationships, driving brand recognition, leading pursuits), project delivery (overseeing large-scale projects, ensuring quality and client satisfaction), operational excellence (profitability, efficiency, resource management, quality deliverables), innovation & influence (championing new technologies and strategies), people management (supporting project delivery, enhancing client relationships), and collaboration (mentoring staff, coordinating with leaders).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Florida PE registration.
  • At least 15 years of progressive roadway/highway engineering experience.
  • Proven leadership in managing multi-discipline teams and complex projects for FDOT and county clients.
  • Success in leading and winning major Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Three project pursuits.
  • Expertise in MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (ORD), with a track record of overseeing high-quality deliverables.
  • Strong business acumen, project management skills, and the ability to build lasting client partnerships.
  • Experience as Engineer of Record for a variety of highway projects, including Limited Access Highways, Tolled Expressways, Urban Arterial Reconstruction and Widenings, and Milling & Resurfacings.
  • Ability to estimate construction costs and provide post-design services during project construction.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and willingness to travel as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with both conventional and alternative delivery projects (Design-Bid-Build, Adjust Score Design-Build, Phased Design-Build).
  • Background as a Project Manager or subject matter expert within Owner’s Representative Contracts for major corridors.
  • Expertise in complex interchange and alternative intersection design.

  • Develop and retain existing associates, recruit new talent and capabilities, and foster a diverse knowledge of appropriate discipline principles and techniques.
  • Work effectively with leaders, teams, and associates across the firm to help drive success, promote teamwork, and coordinate resource levels to ensure client needs are satisfied and associates are exposed to diverse and escalating project responsibilities.
  • Provide expertise on standards, quality assurance, and construction methods and materials, ensuring adherence to all client and regulatory requirements.
  • Cultivate client relationships, drive brand recognition, and lead winning pursuits for major FDOT and county projects.
  • Oversee large-scale conventional and design-build projects, ensuring quality, efficiency, and client satisfaction.
  • Drive operational excellence, including profitability, operational efficiency, resource management, and quality deliverables, and provide subject matter expertise.
  • Champion new technologies, tools, and training, setting the direction for the discipline with strategies that deliver measurable business growth over the next 1–3 years.
  • Manage a team that supports the successful delivery of large, complex projects, applying knowledge of project management principles and practices, and enhancing strong client relationships and growth of our portfolio.
  • Inspire and mentor highway service group staff, coordinate with other highway leaders and key personnel in the East Region, and create an environment where ideas thrive and careers flourish.
