High Voltage Substation/Transmission Technician Lead

NAESNew York, NY
$70 - $70Onsite

About The Position

The High Voltage Substation/Transmission Technician Lead is responsible for conducting routine inspections of high-voltage transmission lines, towers, and associated equipment to identify signs of wear, damage, or corrosion, followed by performing preventative maintenance tasks to forestall outages and maintain system integrity. In emergency situations, prompt coordination with NYPA and external contractors ensures the safe repair or replacement of damaged components, while collaboration with technicians and field crews aids in restoration efforts. Additionally, supervision of testing and troubleshooting involves overseeing the use of specialized equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in electrical or technical field preferred.
  • 5–6 years of progressive experience in high-voltage transmission line maintenance, including inspection, repair, and preventative maintenance of overhead transmission infrastructure.
  • Technical expertise in transmission system components, including conductors, insulators, towers, grounding systems, and related field equipment.
  • Proven experience coordinating and executing field maintenance and emergency restoration activities with utilities, contractors, and transmission stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to diagnose transmission system faults and failures, including troubleshooting outages, insulation issues, and equipment degradation in high-voltage environments.
  • Solid understanding of electrical system fundamentals, including grounding principles, insulation coordination, and protective relay function as applied to transmission systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety compliance in high-voltage environments, including enforcement of lockout/tagout procedures, PPE requirements, and field hazard controls.
  • Experience overseeing field crews or work activities, ensuring proper execution of maintenance tasks, adherence to procedures, and coordination of multiple work fronts.
  • Experience using CMMS or asset management systems (e.g., Maximo) to document maintenance activities, track work orders, and support reporting and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of high-voltage transmission lines, towers, and associated equipment to identify wear, damage, corrosion, or other defects.
  • Perform preventative maintenance activities to maintain system integrity and reduce the risk of outages.
  • Coordinate and supervise emergency response efforts with internal teams and external contractors during system disturbances, including storm damage and equipment failures.
  • Oversee repair or replacement of critical components such as conductors, insulators, and line hardware, ensuring timely system restoration and coordination with field crews.
  • Supervise the use of specialized testing and diagnostic equipment to evaluate transmission line performance and system health.
  • Oversee fault analysis, including short circuit and insulation diagnostics, and ensure proper calibration and operation of protective relays and associated control devices.
  • Coordinate vegetation management activities with internal teams and contractors to maintain required right-of-way (ROW) clearances.
  • Oversee inspection and mitigation of vegetation encroachment to ensure safe and reliable transmission corridor operation.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of inspections, maintenance activities, and system conditions within asset management systems.
  • Oversee incident and near-miss reporting while ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures and proper PPE usage.
  • Support safety training participation and enforcement of field safety standards.
  • Oversee CMMS (Maximo) utilization for tracking maintenance activities, ensuring accurate data entry, system compliance, and optimized workflow management.
  • Assign and prioritize work orders, monitor execution progress, and analyze maintenance data to identify trends and improve operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams and stakeholders to develop, optimize, and adjust maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and maximize system availability.
  • Ensure effective execution of planned and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Monitor maintenance expenditures for high-voltage transmission and substation operations, ensuring adherence to approved budgets.
  • Identify cost optimization opportunities and support development of annual maintenance budgets through data analysis, equipment needs forecasting, and lifecycle cost insights.
