About The Position

This is a National Guard Title 5 Excepted Service position for a High Voltage Electrician within the MI 127th Civil Engineering Squadron. The role involves serving as a High Voltage Electrician responsible for the installation, modification, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of electric power controlling equipment and distribution lines. This includes working with transformers, converters, regulators, cables, switches, circuit breakers, and other electrical components in substations. The position requires adjusting relays and control equipment, installing and repairing overhead and underground electrical distribution lines, and servicing various electrical system components such as lines, breakers, transformers, insulators, grounding systems, poles, relays, meters, lightning arresters, and airfield lighting systems. The electrician will also be responsible for stringing wires, troubleshooting distribution circuits, and performing emergency repairs, sometimes on energized systems. A strong emphasis is placed on utilizing safety practices and procedures, maintaining a safe work environment, and frequently working on high voltage electrical systems with necessary safety precautions.

  • Irregular and overtime hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies.
  • The employee may be required to travel in military and/or commercial aircraft/vehicle to perform temporary duty assignments.
  • Must have a valid civilian driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position.
  • Position requires the ability to discern colors and contrast.
  • May be required to possess a valid operator's license to drive a motor vehicle to and from work sites AND/OR, may be required to procure a government operator's permit or obtain a commercial driver's license to drive and/or operate special electrical repair trucks and/or obtain a flight line driver's license.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • The incumbent is subject to short or no-notice recall to duty for emergency situations or exercise.
  • Employee may be required to carry a government-provided cellular telephone.
  • Resume must clearly describe experience demonstrating ability to perform duties of a High Voltage Electrician at the WG-10 level without more than normal supervision, including high-voltage installation, repair, and troubleshooting.
  • 18 months experience or training demonstrating knowledge of electrical theory (e.g., power factors, transformers, series and parallel circuits, line loading, line losses).
  • Ability to read and comprehend circuit diagrams and schematics.
  • Experience in installing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying high-voltage electrical systems and major substation components.
  • Experience in diagnosing trouble and determining remedy when complex relationships exist among different electrical system circuits requiring knowledge of all electrical units and systems.
  • Experience in making high-voltage electrical repairs that required the use of precision measuring equipment and common hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Install, modify, test, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair electric power controlling equipment and/or distribution lines.
  • Install, modify, test, repair, and maintain transformers, converters, regulators, cables, switches, circuit breakers, mechanical and electronic systems, and other circuit elements found in substations.
  • Adjust relays and control equipment to obtain specified voltage, current, time delay, and other characteristics for appropriate holding, tripping, or other operational functions.
  • Install, modify, connect, inspect, and repair overhead and underground electrical distribution lines.
  • Service lines, breakers, disconnect switches, transformers, insulators, grounding systems, fuses, poles (metal and wood), relays, meters, lightning arresters, cathodic protection systems, traffic lights, street and floodlight systems, airfield lighting systems, and power supplies.
  • String wires and hoist conductors up to the cross arms.
  • Troubleshoot distribution circuits and generating and controlling equipment.
  • Make emergency repairs and substitutions of power lines and equipment, sometimes working on distribution systems when they are energized.
  • Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Frequently work on high voltage electrical systems when they are "hot," using necessary safety equipment, methods, and precautions.
