High Voltage Design Engineer

IRENVancouver, BC

About The Position

Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, the High Voltage Design Engineer will act as Owner’s representative in the design of our High and Medium Voltage substations infrastructure for our Canadian data center projects. This role is ideal for an engineer with strong detailed design experience from a consulting/engineering firm environment, who is looking to transition into an owner’s engineering role with end-to-end responsibility—from early concept through energization and operations. You will work across our Canadian project portfolio, partnering with utilities, EPCs, and internal stakeholders to deliver standardized, scalable, and highly reliable substation solutions for our greenfield and brownfield projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
  • 7-10 years of progressive experience in substation engineering, ideally with direct, hands-on detailed design experience from a consulting/engineering firm or utility environment (strongly preferred)
  • Proven experience delivering substation projects from concept through construction and commissioning
  • Strong knowledge of substation physical design, grounding, lightning protection, and insulation coordination and protection & control
  • AC/DC auxiliary systems and station service design
  • Familiarity with engineering tools such as ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, PSSE, CDEGS (or similar) would be an asset
  • Field experience in construction, commissioning, or testing would be an asset
  • Strong understanding of applicable Canadian codes and relevant industry and utility standards
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, multi-project environment
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interface with utilities, contractors, and internal stakeholders
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality, safety, and reliability
  • Comfortable balancing standardization vs. project-specific customization

Responsibilities

  • Lead and review the detailed design of HV/MV substations (typically 12kV to 287kV), including one-line diagrams and protection philosophies, switchyard layouts, grounding and lightning protection systems, AC/DC auxiliary systems and station service design, cable routing, duct banks, and raceway design
  • Perform and/or review engineering studies including short circuit, load flow, grounding, insulation coordination, and equipment duty
  • Develop and maintain standardized substation design templates to support rapid deployment of data center campuses
  • Act as Owner’s Engineer, overseeing external engineering consultants and EPC contractors for Substation design
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables, calculations, drawings, and specifications
  • Ensure designs align with project requirements, reliability targets, and internal standards
  • Support value engineering and constructability reviews to optimize cost, schedule, and scalability
  • Collaborate with internal teams (data center design, construction, operations)
  • Develop and/or review technical specifications for major substation equipment (transformers, breakers, AIS equipment, protection systems, etc)
  • Support procurement activities including technical bid evaluations and vendor document reviews
  • Provide engineering support during construction (RFI responses, site issue resolution), Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), Commissioning and energization
  • Conduct site visits to verify existing conditions and monitor installation quality
  • Coordinate across disciplines including civil, structural, protection & control (P&C), and SCADA
