About The Position

The Maryland Port Administration (MPA) is seeking a motivated, positive, and driven Maintenance High Voltage Crane Electrician to join the MPA Facility Maintenance/Operations Division. The primary responsibility of this position is to maintain, install, and repair electrical infrastructure throughout all MDOT-MPA Marine terminals. This includes troubleshooting and correcting various problems occurring with electric power feeders, panels, interior and exterior lighting; sheds, buildings; booths; berths; cranes; lots and switchgear. The electrical distribution system(s), which carries more than 600 volts, that this position is responsible for is vital to the operations of the MPA and its customers. This position requires compliance with applicable OSHA standards, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) necessary to perform essential job duties. Employees are responsible for maintaining the grooming, safety, and physical standards required for the safe and effective use of PPE. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining a clean-shave of those parts of face required to ensure the proper fit and seal of tight-fitting respirators, as well as removing jewelry or other items that may interfere with the safe and effective use of PPE, in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal occupational safety and health regulations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Five (5) years of experience in an industrial or commercial setting performing journey level electrical work installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical equipment to include two (2) years working with motors and control circuitry and one (1) year working in the field of electronics.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with high-voltage (at least 13,000 volts) electrical service, switch gear and control wiring in an industrial or commercial setting.
  • Possess a current Maryland Master Electrician's license (applicants must list the license number and date on the application) or must secure a Maryland Master Electrician's license during the probationary period.
  • Possess a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • During the probationary period employees are required to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License valid in the State of Maryland.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a formal training program in electrical maintenance and construction at an accredited vocational-technical post-secondary school, accredited college or university or military school may substitute for two (2) years of the required general journeyman electrical experience.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship and training program recognized by the Maryland State Apprenticeship & Training Council (MATC) and/or approved by the U.S. Department of Labor may substitute for two (2) years of the required general journeyman electrical experience.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Experience Requirement of the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnosing, locating, and repairing power disruption problems reported by MPA Operations or tenants involving voltages up to 13,200 volts.
  • Installs, modifies, maintains, tests, cleans, dismantles, and removes underground and overhead high voltage distribution circuits, high voltage lines/feeders, and high voltage equipment up to 13,000 volts.
  • Performing preventative maintenance on all power distribution equipment including substations, switchgear, transformers, breaker panels, power consumption meters, crane slip rings, vacuum breaks, contactors, and switches.
  • Performing corrective maintenance to make additions to and modifications of existing electrical wiring systems including high mast lighting, navigational lighting, range lights, traffic and sign lights, cruise terminal passenger bridge, etc.
