The California Virtual Academies (CAVA) is a network of 9 public charter schools providing online/virtual home-based instruction to students in grades TK-12 across California. Utilizing K12, inc. curriculum and the Engageli platform for live instruction, CAVA offers a unique educational experience. While providing scheduling flexibility, students are still required to engage daily with online coursework and attend instructional sessions. High School teachers manage a caseload of both content and homeroom students, delivering standards-based instruction in virtual classrooms, supporting students with coursework, offering one-to-one assistance, and grading work within three days. They foster relationships with homeroom students through daily sessions, monthly direct contact, and by monitoring attendance, progress, and engagement, providing interventions as needed. Teachers are expected to plan and attend in-person outings and events, and communicate regularly with learning coaches and families via various channels. Quarterly parent/teacher/student conferences, virtual meetings, PLCs, data conferencing, and professional development (virtual and in-person) are also part of the role. Face-to-face tutoring and other in-person opportunities may occur, and all teachers are required to proctor state testing.
