The California Virtual Academies (CAVA) is a network of 9 public charter schools providing online/virtual home-based instruction to students in grades TK-12 across California. Utilizing K12, Inc. curriculum and the Engageli platform for live instruction, CAVA offers a blend of flexibility and structure, requiring students to log in daily, complete coursework, and attend instructional sessions. High School teachers manage a caseload of both content and homeroom students. They deliver standards-based instruction in virtual classrooms, provide one-to-one support, and grade work within three days. Homeroom teachers build relationships through daily sessions, monthly outreach, and monitoring attendance, progress, and engagement, providing interventions as needed. Teachers are expected to plan and attend in-person outings and events, often with locally assigned homeroom students. Communication with learning coaches and families occurs regularly via telephone, web conferencing, and email. Teachers conduct quarterly parent/teacher/student conferences, attend virtual meetings, participate in PLCs, data conferencing, and professional development (both virtual and in-person). Face-to-face tutoring and other in-person opportunities with students may occur, and all teachers are required to proctor state testing.
