About The Position

MassLive, the largest news and information website in Massachusetts, is seeking an experienced high school sports reporter to lead an expansion into Central Massachusetts. This role is based in Worcester and will be responsible for owning MassLive’s Central Massachusetts high school sports coverage, becoming the dedicated voice for the leagues, rivalries, schools, and athletes in the region. The reporter will work alongside the High School Sports Editor and collaborate with the statewide high school sports team, with opportunities to develop their own voice, pursue original story ideas, establish recurring coverage franchises, and shape MassLive's high school sports coverage in Central Massachusetts. Beyond traditional game coverage, the role involves using digital platforms for various storytelling formats, including rankings, data, interactive content, short-form video, live coverage, and on-camera reporting. Responsibilities include rankings for teams and players, breaking news, enterprise reporting, feature stories, and preview content. The reporter will also contribute to MassLive's live-streaming coverage by identifying games and storylines for a statewide audience and participating in select broadcasts.

Requirements

  • A degree in journalism or communication, or an equivalent education and work experience with proven ability in journalism reporting and writing.
  • Minimum of two years of journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing required.
  • Strong knowledge of Central Massachusetts high school sports, or the ability to quickly build trusted relationships with coaches, athletes, families, and school communities across the region.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately.
  • Solid understanding of news writing, reporting, journalistic ethics, and story structure.
  • Must be able to work nights and some weekends.
  • Ability to learn and master the methods and applications used to deliver content across a variety of platforms.
  • Mastery of social media and digital interaction.
  • Reliable transportation to meet with sources or cover events throughout Central Massachusetts.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual and multilingual language skills are a plus.
  • Broadcast experience a plus.

  • Shoot, edit, and publish short-form video content optimized for Instagram and mobile audiences.
  • Appear on camera for live hits, interviews, live streams, and social media-first reporting.
