About The Position

Join our SportsDay team as a fall intern covering high school football and other sports. The intern will be a member of The Dallas Morning News’ award-winning sports staff. Reporting assignments will be a mix of daily and enterprise coverage, mostly high school football, but there will be opportunities to cover college and professional sports, as well as general assignment news. Weekend work is required. A cover letter and résumé with references are required with all applications. Requirements

Strong writing and editing skills
At least one previous internship in sports media
Strong news judgment and excellent verbal and analytical skills
Experience covering breaking news
Strong organizational and time-management skills
The ability to work under pressure with assigned deadlines

Nice To Haves

Experiment with Advanced AI to enhance journalism and reporting efforts
Generate headline options, SEO keywords or alert language
Clean up grammar, apply style and improve clarity
Version stories for different formats (video, audio) or platforms (social media)
Monitor public meetings and get alerts with transcripts and video
AI-assisted data processing and summarization, human-verified before use

Responsibilities

Cover high school football and volleyball games
Write weekly posts on teams, games and players to watch
Pitch and write features and enterprise or trend pieces on high school sports
Take photos and videos using your phone at events
Maintain an active presence on social media
Cover college and professional sporting events, such as the State Fair Classic, the Red River Rivalry and Dallas Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars and Wings games.
Work nights, weekends and occasional holidays as dictated by the news cycle
