About The Position

The High School Social Studies Teacher inspires students to become informed, active citizens. The role fosters a deep understanding of historical events, economic principles, geographic patterns, and democratic governance while developing students' critical thinking and evidence-based reasoning skills. This position involves teaching various levels of Social Studies (grades 9-12) aligned with the Michigan High School Content Expectations (HSCE).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies Education, History, Political Science, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate with a Social Studies (RX) endorsement for grades 6-12 (or 9-12).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that adhere to state and school curriculum standards.
  • Teach a range of Social Studies courses, including but not limited to U.S. History, World History, Economics, and Government.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Integrate technology and multimedia resources to enhance the learning experience.
  • Design and administer assessments to evaluate student progress and understanding.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback on student assignments, assessments, essays, and projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and progress.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies to ensure a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Address and resolve student behavior issues in accordance with school policies.
  • Foster a supportive and encouraging atmosphere for all students.
  • Identify and support students with varying academic needs, including those requiring additional help or advanced challenges.
  • Encourage students to develop critical thinking, analytical, and creative skills.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in Social Studies education.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and parents to support student achievement and school initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of school-wide literacy programs.
  • Advise or coach extracurricular activities, such as the school newspaper, literary magazine, or debate team, as needed.
