About The Position

Uncommon Schools is seeking an experienced First Robotics Competition (FRC) coach to guide a rookie team at Uncommon Collegiate Charter High School. This role is part-time and involves leading a "Project" class that meets twice a week for two hours, with additional after-school hours. During the build season (January - April), the coach will work with students for several hours after school and on weekends. The goal is to provide students with an edge for college admissions and persistence through nationally recognized competitive programs. Candidates who competed in FRC during high school are preferred. The coaching role reports to the Enrichment Program Manager.

Requirements

  • Experience as a First Robotics Competition (FRC) coach.
  • Ability to lead a "Project" class that meets twice a week for two hours.
  • Willingness to work several hours after school and on weekends during build season.
  • Commitment to working with students from August to June.
  • Ability to establish and maintain family communication protocols.
  • Ability to confirm student commitment via signed parent permission form.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates who competed in FRC while in high school are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for Projects, competitions, and after-school practices (up to 2 hours per week).
  • Conduct Fall Semester Practices (4 hours per week total).
  • Lead long-term coaching during "Projects" (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 hour each day, August to June), continuing practices after school.
  • Dedicate time during Build Season (January - April) for practices (8 hours per week total), including at least 6 hours of practice outside of school hours weekly.
  • Continue practices after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with additional hours required on other days.
  • Manage Spring activities (April-June) including wrapping up the competition year, inventory, ordering materials, preparing student leaders, and recruiting new team members (2 hours per week total).
  • Register for and participate in 2-3 competitions per school year, including at least one regional/district competition and one off-season competition.
  • Establish a family communication protocol using the Remind app in partnership with the Enrichment Program Manager.
  • Confirm team member commitment via signed parent permission form, acknowledging after-school commitment.
