About The Position

The High School Patient Care Intern (HSPCI) completes patient care activities and provides clerical support as delegated by the RN.

Requirements

  • Current High School student (rising Senior/Senior) who has completed one year of Health Tech education or a participant of another Workforce Development identified program.
  • Work Permit Required for students under the age of 18.
  • Effective communication with people from varied socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Able to organize changing work assignments.
  • Flexibility.
  • Patient focused.
  • Positive, can-do attitude; self-motivated and willing to learn.
  • Basic computer data entry skills.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.

  • Basic patient care skills.

Responsibilities

  • Complete patient care activities and provide clerical support as delegated by the RN.
  • Perform Hospitality Rounds including providing water and ice, offering blankets, ensuring incentive spirometers are at the bedside, and checking that personal equipment is within reach.
  • Converse with patients and use the activity cart for delirious patients.
  • Set up AM Care by distributing linen packs and supplies for baths.
  • Set up empty rooms for admissions.
  • Restock warming cabinets, yellow isolation caddies, and patient room supplies such as non-sterile gloves, Ambu bags, flowmeters, and suction heads.
  • Perform white board audits, ensuring RN and UAP names, dates, and team names are present.
  • Clean equipment including BP machines, thermometers, glucometers, IV pumps, telemetry boxes, WOWs, and computers.
  • Create unit-based packets, such as admission packets.
  • Operate the volunteer cart.
  • Assist the Unit Secretary by filing paperwork, greeting visitors, answering the phone, and responding to the intercom.
  • Carry patient belongings to curbside upon discharge.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Comply with all policies and standards.
  • Abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI).
